Welcome Little One

A friend of mine needed a card for someone that had a new baby boy, and instead of running to the store to get a card she asked me to make one. It always makes me feel good when people like my cards.

I used some striped paper with blues and greens in it to cut for the blanket of this card.  This cut can be found on two Cricut cartridges . . . the Sampler cartridge and New Arrival.  The blanket paper was a double sided paper, so the flip side was used for the light blue squares.

Did you know that tomorrow is National Card Making Day!?!?!  I might try to start celebrating early by working on a set of Disney Themed cards that I have in mind.  Maybe that Disney Pixar Blog Hop we just got done having inspired me.

Making money with crafting ~ Affiliate Programs

Yesterday I wrote about a variety of ways that you can make money from your crafts or crafting blog.  Today I would like to talk about one of those ways in more detail, and show you how I am making it work for me . . . and how you can do it too.

Affiliate Advertising - When you visit a website or blog, have you ever noticed the banner ads on the side or at the bottom of the page.  Most likely, these are due to Affiliate Advertising Programs. There are websites, such as Share A Sale, which allows you to search for businesses that have affiliate programs and sign up for them.  Once you are approved, you can choose from approved banners and advertisements to place on your website, blog or newsletter and when someone makes a purchase through the link connected with your affiliate account you receive a small commission.
The great thing is that MANY companies offer affiliate programs which allow you to make a commission off of sales you generate.  Why would they pay YOU to promote and sell their products?  Because advertising costs a LOT of money.  If a company were to purchase ad spaces on hundreds of blogs and websites, it would hit their budget hard.  But if they offer a percentage of the sales to people then EVERY wants to put their button and ads up on their site . . . and then all of a sudden they have ads EVERYWHERE.

I have tried some affiliate programs, and some are better than others.  Personally I feel like you need to find ones that offer a good commission and have a product that you actually use or enjoy.  It makes it easier to promote if it is something that you feel good about.

Can I REALLY make money with my crafts or crafting blog?

Many crafters start creating things because they love to do so, and it is a great creative outlet, but they will often wonder "Could I make money doing this?"  The answer is YES, there are ways to make money from crafts or crafting blogs.

1.  Sell your crafts at craft shows.  Probably the one of the easiest ways to make money from your crafts is to sell them at a craft show.  You can usually contact your local churches and community centers find out about purchasing booth space in their craft shows.  This is a good way to get your product out in front of people and network with other crafters to find out about shows and sales that they have sold their products.

2.  Sell your crafts online.  This is another easy, straightforward way to make money from crafting.  There are sites, such as Etsy, which basically bring the craft show right to your computer!  Just take a picture of your item, upload it to your Etsy page and then you can start to promote that page and use it to generate sales.  There are even tools to help you insert a preview of the items you are selling on a website or blog.

3.  Create a crafting website or blog.  One thing about crafters, we love to look at items created by others.  For many of us, it helps with inspiration for our own projects.  Creating a crafting blog or website allows you to network with other who enjoy the same hobby as you, while you showcase your creations.  How does just talking about crafting make you money?  Advertising.  There are several ways to do this, so I am going to sub-divide this section.

   A)  Buy Me A Coffee/Donations – One easy way to try and make money with your crafting website or blog is to ask for donations.  If there are people who really love your site and what you do, they may be willing to donate some money in order to see your site be able to operate.  Now, if you don’t want it to come off as you are begging for money why not make it fun and call it “Buy Me A Coffee”.  This lets people know that you are not in any way expecting anyone to donate large amounts of money, but if even a few people donated $5, it would help you to cover the costs of operating the site.  You could even set up different levels, so that people can choose if they are going to purchase a small, medium or large “coffee” for you, with the dollar amounts already preset for them.  The simple option is to leave it open for them to chose.

If your site is purely about one specific type of craft, such as scrapbooking, and you wanted to call it “My Cardstock Fund” that would be cute too.  Making it fun, light-hearted and personal will make people more open to donating.

   B)  Google Ads - With many blogs you can easily install ads from businesses like Google on your site.  When people visiting your site click on the Google ads that they are interested in you will get paid a certain rate per click by the advertiser.  IMPORTANT:  Google monitors clicks for fraudulent activity, so visitors should only click on ads that they are truly interested in. In other words, don't tell all of your friends to just go and click on the ads so you can make a ton of money.  Google will catch on and remove you from the program completely and you will not receive any of the money generated from the ads.

   C) Amazon Ads and Links - Many people shop at Amazon every day.  What if there was a way for you to "showcase" items related to your craft on your site that were being sold on Amazon, such as books, tools and products, and for you to then receive a commission for directing people to that product.  There is!  With Amazon Associates Program, once you create an account, you can create an Amazon virtual store.  This allows you to feature times that would be of interest to people coming to your blog, and when they make a purchase through the Amazon link on your blog, it generates a small commission for you, but if you have enough traffic and are featuring the right items, a dollar here and there starts to add up.

    D) Affiliate Advertising - When you visit a website or blog, have you ever noticed the banner ads on the side or at the bottom of the page.

  E)  Selling ad space – This might not be something that you can jump into right away, but when your site becomes popular enough you may want to look into selling ad space to others that are also targeting the same market of people as you are.

  F)   Sponsors – This is also an area where you may have to build a following and be able to show companies that your site is something different and special from every other crafting site that is already out there.  Sponsorship could be a monetary amount or through products for you to feature on your site and use in contests and give-aways, which help to bring more traffic into your site.

4.  Create a product.  – If you see the need for a product or tool in the crafting world, why not be the person that creates that item and fills that need.  You can then use some of the items listed above as ways to sell that product.  Yes, this will involve some up front costs to create a product or tool, but if you have ever said "There should be a . . . " why not be the person to create that item instead of seeing in a store 3 years from now and say to yourself "I thought of that too!"

5.  Write about crafting. – There are ways to make money crafting without ever creating an actual craft project.  If you have superior writing skills, then put those to use writing articles or books on crafting.  A blog is a great way to start, but there are also magazines and websites that may be looking for someone to write on crafts.  You could write on crafts in general, trends in crafting and even tutorial/how to type items.

6.  Create a crafting DVD. - Do people look to you for ideas, tips and inspiration?  Has anyone ever told you that you are really talented in your craft and that you showed them something that they had never even thought of doing?  Maybe you should create a DVD so that you can share that talent and knowledge with others.  If you own a video camera and a tripod, you can get started taping instructional videos or a series of informational DVD's.

7.  Teach a crafting class - Do you have great teaching skills?  Why not teach a class on crafting.  This is similar to the writing and DVD, but just on a more personal level.  You could contact your local craft stores to see if they would be interested in hosting your class for one evening a week.  This is a good way to introduce your class to people, and you could feature and use products from the store in your class to generate sales for the store, so it is a win-win situation.  Other places to teach classes could include after-school programs, community centers, libraries and retirement homes.

While none of these alone will make you enough money to retire overnight, when combined and done over an extended period you can turn your hobby and love for crafts into something that generates some additional income.

Tomorrow I am going to tell you more about one specific system I have found that is really working great for me.

Today I want to spend a little more time telling you about  ScrapBands.

ScrapBands are a fun way to embellish the OUTSIDE of your scrapbooks.

When I first started scrapbooking I thought it would look so nice if I had books that were all the same color, so they would look nice on the shelf.

Then once I had more than 3 books I realized it was hard to tell which book was for which year.  For example, if I wanted to quickly grab the scrapbook from 2010 that had our trip to Walt Disney World in it, I would have to look at each book to figure out which one had those pictures.  I wanted something on the outside of the album so I could find it fast, so I used a plain ScrapBand and my embroidery/sewing machine and look what I did!

Makes it pretty easy to tell which year this book is for, and that it was the year of our Walt Disney World trip, don't you think?

I want to do this will all of the books, by adding the year to the spine.  For years with other big events I could add a tag, like on this ScrapBand.

Then you can easily write the year and the big events of that year on the tag . . . Beth's 10th Birthday, Tommy Graduates High School, Gabby is born, Gage is born, trip to Salt Lake City . . . using a few examples from events over the past couple of years in my family that I would want to add to a tag like this.

You can purchase plain bands that you embellish yourself, like I did.  The plain one worked great in my embroidery machine.

If you don't do machine embroidery you could use fabric paint pens or iron on transfers to create something like this.  ScrapBands also carries a selection of pre-decorated bands and embroidered bands that you can choose from if you don't want to decorate it yourself.

For our MyCutSearch.com Anniversary Celebration ScrapBands is offering

20% off your entire order of $30 or more at ScrapBands.com when you use the Promo Code MCS20
This discount is good from now until October 31, 2011.

You can also find ScrapBands on Facebook by clicking HERE.

Since we will be linking up scrapbook layouts here, I decided to show you a scrapbook layout that I did of a trip to Disney.  This was actually my very first scrapbook that I ever did.  My kids were so much younger then, and I had this idea to do a book that was "The ABC's of Disney".  Each page was a different letter and all of the photos related to that letter.

This page is the T page . . . T is for Timon, Tigger, and even my son, Tommy!

Be sure to come back tomorrow to find out the winners from the Disney Pixar Blog Hop!

Makes it pretty easy to tell which year this book is for, and that it was the year of our Walt Disney World trip, don't you think?  You can purchase plain bands that you embellish yourself.  If you don't do machine embroidery you could use fabric paint pens or iron on transfers to create something like this.  ScrapBands also carries a selection of pre-decorated bands that you can choose from.  For our MyCutSearch.com Anniversary Celebration ScrapBands is offering

This is so great, and we have not even gotten to any of the projects for today yet, so let's get started . . .

For today's project I made a card, and I used Boo from Monsters Inc. as my main character.

For the background of this card I used some paper with pick flowers that reminded me of the flowers on Boo's bedroom door from the movie. Then I also used some teal colored paper that had a scaly look to it . . . like a monster might have.  I did some embossing on the pink paper and then added the sentiment

challenges are just opportunities in disguised

This sentiment is from the Positive Thoughts stamp set by K Andrew Designs.

As a special treat K Andrew Designs is offering 20% off your purchase when you use the Promo Code
20shawn

This is a great chance to stock up on some WONDERFUL stamps!  Make sure to head over to Getting Cricky and see what the rest of the Design Team has made with Kristal's stamps.

As if that was not enough, before you go I would like to offer you a chance to win a prize of a $25 Gift Certificate to Custom Crops!

Those of you that know me know that my family created the website MyCutSearch.com and that I like to have everyone play a game with MyCutSearch.com in order to enter to win prizes.  Here is the question you need to answer.  What is the OTHER image that is on the same handbook page as the cut I used for my card?

Hint: if you search the words

Boo costume

you will easily find the handbook page that this cut is from . . . then just look at the image for the Icon Feature.

Then send me an email by clicking here or by using the Contact Us Page at MyCutSearch.com telling me what is the OTHER image that is on the same handbook page as cut of Boo that I used.

Good luck and thanks for playing!  Winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 4th.

Disney Pixar Blog Hop - Day One

Welcome to the Disney Pixar Blog Hop!

We are so glad that you could join us again for another hop!  Remember, if you want to be the FIRST to know about upcoming hops, be sure to join Shawn and Melissa's Blog Hop Facebook Page.

We have been having a LOT of fun this week celebrating the one year anniversary of MyCutSearch.com.  All week we have had Promo Codes for discounts on amazing products.  If you missed any of them you can click HERE and still get in on the great deals!

For today's project I decided to go "old school" and not cover the entire page with paper.  The colorful Disney characters looked nice against the white background.  I used some pictures that I took, some that my daughter took and one that the Disney staff took of our whole family in front of the castle.

I enlarged the picture of the castle to a 5x7, and then matted it with yellow and a blue paper that I had with little magic wands and bursts of color.  I used my Mickey Font cartridge to do the words Magical Memories on the two pages of the layout.

The banner was actually NOT part of the original plan of the layout, but Daisy and Donald's hands did not cut out clean, and I did not want to have to throw away the entire cut.  I could have re-cut that portion of the image, but instead I decided to make a banner that covered it.  On the banner I added some gold stickers with the year that we went to Walt Disney World.

The second side of the layout has a cut of Minnie and Mickey hugging, right next to the picture my daughter took of the Minnie and Mickey topiary trees.  I used a Mickey Mouse punch that I have for the embellishment between the picture of the family and the statue of Walt and Mickey.

Before you go I would like to offer you a chance to win a prize of a $25 Gift Certificate to Custom Crops!

Those of you that know me know that my family created the website MyCutSearch.com and that I like to have everyone play a game with MyCutSearch.com in order to enter to win prizes.  Since my layout had paper with a wand in it, let's go to MyCutSearch and search the word

wand

and then send me an email by clicking here or by using the Contact Us Page at MyCutSearch.com telling me how many Cricut handbook pages came up in the search for the word wand.

Good luck and thanks for playing!  Winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 4th.
Submission for this contest are now closed

Be sure to stop back tomorrow to see a new Disney project and a whole new line up of bloggers!

MyCutSearch Anniversary ~ Searching for Fonts with Shadows

Grab a cup of coffee . . . I am going to share some tips on features and searches you might not even know that you can do with MyCutSearch.

If you have ever been working on a project where you KNEW you wanted to use two colors on your lettering to give it that layered effect, like this.

To do this, you would need to use a font that includes a shadow cut feature.  Well, if you are like me, before MyCutSearch came along you would flip through all of your font handbooks to find the PERFECT font for your project, only to be disappointed when you saw that there was no shadow cut feature for that font.  Well not anymore!  What if you could JUST preview the fonts that HAVE a shadow cut?  Let me show you how you can do this.

Let's use the image in the layout above for an example of how to search for images with shadow cuts.

First, go to MyCutSearch, and on the left hand side you will see Advanced MyCutSearch.  It is the third item down on the list.  Click on that.

That will take you to a screen that looks like this.

Next,
Make sure the keywords box is un-checked
Check the font box and check the character-number-symbol box
In the search bar, type in

s shadow

The image below shows the boxes you should have checked, and along with the search parameter information.

Click on search
Now you will see only the pages with a letter S that also has a shadow cut

Remember, you can always click on any of these images to get a larger preview.

And if that is still not big enough for you, you can click on the single preview image to enlarge that one more time.

I hope that this helped you to learn something new about MyCutSearch, and how you can use it for your papercrafting needs.

Join us tomorrow for the start of the Disney Pixar Blog Hop!

MyCutSearch Anniversary ~ Searching for Imagine Patterns

Here is a MyCutSearch Tip for you that you might not even know about.  It is specifically for all of you Imagine owners.

Now, I don't own an Imagine, so had to do some thinking when it came to all of those backgrounds and patterns that are included on the cartridges.  How in the world was a going to "categorize" those?  Then I started to think about how I look at paper when I go to start a project.  Sometimes I know I want a specific color or pattern.

So let's pretend you were getting ready to scrapbook a layout of a summer picnic.  Wouldn't a gingham check pattern be nice to use, since it would look like a traditional picnic tablecloth?  So go to MyCutSearch.com and type in

You should get this for your search results

That's right . . . that is a preview of all of the Imagine handbook pages that have a gingham check pattern.

Here is a larger view of one of them.

Some of the other patterns you can search for are floral, stripe and polka dot.  I hope that all of the Imagine owners like this feature and find it helpful!

Tomorrow we another MyCutSearch Tip and then we jump into the Disney Pixar Blog Hop for the weekend.  I hope that you join us for all of the fun!

This set has stamps for Halloween and Fall, and best of all it is Mix and Match!!!!  This means that you have even MORE ways to use this set since you can create your OWN phrases just by combining the different words on this set.  Let's take the word Treat and see how many phrases we can come up with from this set . . .

Trick or Treat
Sweet Treat
A little sweet treat
Halloween Treat
Boo-tiful Treat
You don't treat me sweet
ya'll treat me sweet
treat me sweet
Treat for you

WOW!  That is a lot of different phrases if you ask me!

For tonight's project I decided to combine the Batty stamp with the for you stamp

The cut on this card is from the Pumpkin Carving Seasonal Cricut cartridge.  For the background I used some paper that I had left over from a Spiderman scrapbooking pack (my daughter used to be VERY into Spiderman)

Now I have something BETTER than Blog Candy to offer you!
